Trump says U.S. will end $4 billion in annual aid to Israel at end of 2026
In a Fox News phone interview on Election Day, President Trump said he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed months ago to stop the aid. It is unclear which funding he meant, and Netanyahu's spokesman said he did not know about the remarks.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he has a deal with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stop sending $4 billion in aid to Israel each year, with the money "cut off at the end of the year" 1. He made the remark in a phone interview with "Fox and Friends" as voters were going to the polls for the midterm elections 1.
Trump gave few details. It was not immediately clear which exact funding he meant 1. A memorandum of understanding that provides $3.8 billion in annual U.S. military aid to Israel is approaching its expiration date in 2028, and talks have been under way on how Washington's assistance would change after that 1. A memorandum of understanding is a written agreement between governments.
Trump said Israel was "fine with it because, you know, they have become a very successful country," adding that "they don't need it" 1. Asked about Trump's comments, a spokesman for Netanyahu said he didn't know anything about the remarks but would check for details 1.
The president tied the decision to politics. "The left uses the $4 billion payment that everybody knows about, when it's no secret, as a as a signal of unfairness, and we can't allow that to happen," he said 1. He also named Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed: "Why should we suffer the slings from lunatics like El-Sayed when they don't need it? It's a bad talking point" 4.

Netanyahu has said publicly he wants to reduce Israel's reliance on American military aid. "I want to draw down to zero the American financial support, the financial component of the military cooperation that we have. Because we receive $3.8 billion a year," the prime minister told CBS News in May 4.
The announcement moved oil markets. Brent crude fell by more than 3% to around $101 per barrel, its lowest level in more than three weeks, as investors and traders viewed the comments as possible evidence that the Iran war could be ended without escalation 1. Trump and Netanyahu launched a war on Iran earlier this year, and U.S. munitions have been increasingly depleted as a result 1.
The pattern is that aid to Israel has become a campaign issue in both parties. Splits over U.S. policy toward Israel, including military aid, have opened in both parties amid the war in Gaza 4. Trump's comments came on the same day as the vote, and the issue has played out in key races including Michigan's Senate contest 4.
That matters because Congress authorizes foreign aid, and Trump did not say how the change would be carried out or what would replace the annual payment 4. He said the U.S. would still help Israel if needed and would sell arms to its closest ally in the Middle East 3. This is a breaking news story, and details may change.
