Two House Democrats back impeaching Attorney General Todd Blanche after midterm wins

Reps. Hank Johnson and Deborah Ross say Blanche should face impeachment, two days after Democrats won both chambers. Removing him would take 67 Senate votes, and Ross said she doesn't know whether Democrats have them.

Two House Democrats said Thursday that Attorney General Todd Blanche should be impeached. They spoke two days after Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate 1.

Rep. Hank Johnson of Georgia spoke on SiriusXM's "The Dan Abrams Show." Abrams asked how Democrats could respond to the Justice Department's alleged use of its power to pursue political retribution for President Trump 1.

I personally believe that the offenses of Todd Blanche demand that he be impeached and convicted and removed from office,

Johnson described that as his personal opinion and said Blanche's efforts to undermine the rule of law cannot go unaddressed 1.

Ross expects a resolution, but wants Hegseth first

Rep. Deborah Ross of North Carolina appeared on the same program. Asked if she supported impeaching Blanche, she said "100 percent," but added that Democrats should start with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth 1.

The Hill reported that Hegseth could face an impeachment vote as soon as next week. Rep. Thomas Massie, a Kentucky Republican, is leading that effort 1. Ross said she expects a Blanche resolution to follow.

The Senate math

The House can impeach an official by majority vote. Removal takes a conviction by two-thirds of the Senate, or 67 of 100 senators. Ross pointed to the new Senate majority. "When you've got 56 Democrats, and there are still some Republicans who have bucked Trump who are there, there is a chance that some of this will happen," she said 1.

Abrams asked whether she thought Democrats might have the 67 votes. Ross said she didn't know the answer. The source also suggested that Democrats' expanded Senate majority could change the calculus for convictions, noting that previous Trump impeachments failed to secure enough Senate votes 2.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, who is set to chair the House Judiciary Committee, told MS NOW that Blanche could face impeachment hearings when Democrats take the House in January 3. Raskin said the Justice Department "has clearly become a Department of Injustice" 3. He pointed to its election-related actions, Blanche's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case and prosecutions of Trump's perceived political opponents 3.

Why Blanche is under scrutiny

The Hill said Blanche's leadership has drawn renewed scrutiny, including the Justice Department's role in Alaska's Senate race. Trump directed the department to sue to block certification under certain conditions if Sen. Dan Sullivan, a Republican, lost to Democrat Mary Peltola. The suit argues that a candidate with a name similar to Sullivan's could confuse voters 1.

Harmeet Dhillon, head of the department's Civil Rights Division, also announced her resignation Thursday. The Hill said that followed months of criticism over how she handled civil rights enforcement 1.

That matters because impeachment talk now reaches beyond one Cabinet member. These are early remarks from individual lawmakers, not a vote or a filed resolution. The House would have to act first, and Senate Republicans would decide whether a trial could succeed.
