U.S. aircraft disables cargo ship in Gulf of Oman, citing Iran blockade

A U.S. military aircraft fired on a St. Kitts-flagged cargo ship on Saturday, the latest strike in a months-long blockade of Iran. Senate Democrats have repeatedly forced votes to limit the president's war powers.

A U.S. military aircraft fired on and disabled a commercial cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman on Saturday, Nov. 7, according to U.S. Central Command, known as CENTCOM. It is the military branch that runs American operations in the Middle East. The ship was trying to break the U.S. blockade of Iran 2.

CENTCOM identified the vessel as the St. Kitts and Nevis-flagged M/V Huda. It said the ship had visited an Iranian port and was trying to leave regional waters 3. U.S. forces first directed the crew to leave the spaces being targeted, and then an aircraft fired precision munitions at the ship's stern, or back end 13.

CENTCOM said the civilian crew "ignored warnings and repeatedly attempted to breach the U.S. naval blockade against Iran" 3. The reports we read do not say whether anyone was hurt or what condition the ship is in now 1. They also include no response from Iran, the ship's owners or its crew 23. Every account of the strike comes from the U.S. military, and none has been independently confirmed.

A blockade with a growing tally

CENTCOM said that since July, U.S. forces have redirected 147 commercial ships and disabled five merchant ships that refused to comply 3. It also said U.S. forces had earlier destroyed 10 Iranian commercial oil tankers. It alleged they were part of a multibillion-dollar shadow network run by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps 3.

CENTCOM estimates the blockade has kept Iran from exporting more than $25 billion in crude oil 12. The command also announced a new task force. It will target Iran's movement of advanced weapons and other sanctioned goods over its land borders and through the Caspian Sea 1.

The tension is rising. Reuters reported that President Donald Trump has threatened a new offensive against Iran. It also reported that Tehran has threatened broad retaliation against Gulf infrastructure, which has put countries in the region on edge 1.

The fight in Congress

Senate Democrats have spent months trying to force votes on limiting the president's power to wage this war. In March, Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia said Democrats would hold "at least one a week" 5.

Those efforts have fallen short so far. On June 18, the Senate blocked a resolution sponsored by Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia by a vote of 48 to 47. Four Republicans (Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Rand Paul) joined most Democrats in favor. Democratic Sen. John Fetterman voted with most Republicans against it 4.

A separate resolution led by Kaine advanced on May 19 and still faces more votes 4. Democrats also said in June that they felt uninformed about the administration's plan to end the war 4.

What happens next

The reports we read do not say how Iran will respond to the strike on the Huda, or whether the White House or members of Congress have commented. Those are the things to watch in the coming days.

That matters because the blockade is an ongoing military operation. Each ship the U.S. disables is another chance for the conflict to widen. Congress has so far failed to decide whether it supports that.
