Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen said Thursday he will not seek the Senate Democratic leadership post, saying the caucus should first agree on what it wants to accomplish with its new majority 1. His decision comes three days after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections 1.

Van Hollen told FOX45 News in Baltimore that he has ruled out running for leader himself 1. Instead, he said Democrats should hold an open and honest discussion within the caucus about how they will move forward before choosing who leads them 1. He named ending the war in Iran and addressing the cost of living as two priorities that should shape that debate 1.

Current Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, predicted Wednesday that he will keep the job. "I'll be reelected as majority leader," Schumer told reporters outside the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee headquarters 2. He said Democrats will enter the new Congress with 54 to 56 seats once results settle 2.

Not every newly elected Democrat is on board. Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, who won a Senate seat, said on a Wednesday press call, "I think it's time for new leadership" 2. Maine's Troy Jackson, who defeated Republican Sen. Susan Collins, told reporters Monday, "I've already said that I told Sen. Schumer that I'm gonna support somebody else" 2.

Kansas Democrat Adam Hamilton, a pastor who unseated Republican Sen. Roger Marshall, told CNN in September, "I'm not supporting Schumer for leader" 2. Michigan's Abdul El-Sayed told MS NOW earlier this fall that he would back Van Hollen for the post: "I would definitely support Sen. Chris Van Hollen and I would love to see him as Senate majority leader" 2.

Van Hollen's choice keeps him free to weigh a 2028 presidential run. He told FOX45 he expects to decide by early next year whether to seek the White House or reelection to his Senate seat, whose term expires in January 2029 1. "This is not a leisurely process," he said 1. He confirmed he will attend next week's What's Next summit in Denver, an event expected to draw prominent Democrats mentioned as possible 2028 candidates 1.

Schumer, 75, has led Senate Democrats since 2017, when then-leader Harry Reid retired, and faces reelection in 2028 2. The leadership vote is expected in early December and will include the newly elected senators in a secret ballot 2. Former Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota predicted, "Given the big night Senate Democrats had, I doubt anyone will challenge him" 2.

Van Hollen said Congress can pursue hearings and spending authority alongside work to lower costs 1. "You can have hearings to shine a spotlight on Trump corruption and how that corruption is hurting the American people," he said 1. He also urged Democrats not to shrink from passing bills Trump might veto: "We shouldn't be calibrating what we do simply on whether Donald Trump is going to sign or not sign something" 1.
