Republican Rep. Julia Letlow is projected to narrowly win Louisiana's Senate race, according to Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ), a nonpartisan race-calling service 1. She defeated Democratic nominee Jamie Davis in the contest to replace outgoing Sen. Bill Cassidy, a Republican 1.
Letlow took about 50 percent of the vote with 100 percent of the vote reported as of early Wednesday morning, The Hill reported 1. Davis lost by just under 2 percentage points in the solid red state 1.
The win makes Letlow the first Republican woman to represent Louisiana in the Senate 1.
How she got there
Letlow was widely expected to win the seat since emerging from the June primary runoff 1. In the first round of the primary, she and another challenger backed by President Trump, state Treasurer John Fleming, defeated Cassidy in the GOP primary 1.
Cassidy had battled with Trump over his vote to convict the former president in 2021 and later over the senator's critical view of the president's nominees for top administration posts, especially Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Health and Human Services secretary 1.
The Democrat, a farmer and former police juror, polled behind the GOP nominee for most of the race 1. DDHQ rated the race as likely Republican ahead of Election Day 1.
Who Letlow is
Letlow, 45, was a higher education administrator when her husband Luke was elected to the state's 5th Congressional District in 2020 1. He died from complications of COVID-19 just weeks before he was set to take office 1.
She then ran and won in the special election for his seat in April 2021, was reelected twice and announced she would run for Senate in January 2026 1. In the House, she has pushed for education-related measures including the Parents Bill of Rights to give parents more consent over public school curricula, which passed the House in 2023, and she has served on the Appropriations Committee 1.
Why it matters
Her arrival puts a woman in a Senate delegation that had not had a Republican woman before, a first the state's voters delivered 1.
The pattern is a split verdict in the Deep South: Louisiana kept its Senate seat in Republican hands even as voters elsewhere decided competitive races. For older readers, the practical effect is that Louisiana's Senate seat stays with a lawmaker who has focused on education policy and spending bills.
The Record
- Letlow won the special election for her late husband's 5th Congressional District seat in April 2021 1.
- Letlow announced in January 2026 that she would run for the Senate 1.
- Letlow was projected to win the Louisiana Senate race with about 50 percent of the vote, defeating Jamie Davis by just under 2 percentage points 1.

Record 100 Democratic women headed to the House, a first
Democrats are projected to win back the House with at least 100 Democratic women serving at once, a milestone the party's women's caucus says voters delivered. It matters because women hold just 28 percent of Congress seats.

Sabato's Crystal Ball moved Minnesota and Louisiana toward Democrats on Friday, and Cook Political Report shifted 14 House and Senate races away from Republicans, saying Democrats are now slight favorites to win the Senate.
