Sen. Tommy Tuberville, a Republican, is projected to defeat former Democratic Sen. Doug Jones in Alabama's governor's race, according to Decision Desk HQ 1. Tuberville will succeed term-limited Republican Gov. Kay Ivey, keeping the governor's office in GOP hands 1.

The result is a rare bright spot for Republicans on a night when Democrats won governorships in Michigan, Minnesota and Texas 234. Alabama has not elected a Democratic governor since Don Siegelman won in 1998 1.

Tuberville, a former head football coach at Auburn University from 1999 to 2008, was first elected to the Senate in 2020 1. He aligned himself closely with President Trump throughout the campaign, emphasizing immigration enforcement, tax cuts and conservative social policies 1.

He held a large fundraising advantage, raising about $17.7 million compared with Jones's $6.8 million, according to an analysis of campaign finance reports through Oct. 27 1. Tuberville secured the Republican nomination in May with more than 85 percent of the vote; Jones won the Democratic primary with nearly 79 percent 1.

The two previously faced off in the 2020 Senate election, when Tuberville defeated Jones by roughly 20 percentage points 1. Tuberville declined to debate Jones, who held a campaign event in October featuring video clips of the Republican's past statements 1.

The race was marked by disagreements over Medicaid expansion and school choice 1. Tuberville opposed expanding Medicaid, arguing the state could not afford it, while Jones supported expansion and proposed phasing out Alabama's CHOOSE Act school voucher program; Tuberville supported expanding the program 1.

A Democratic sweep elsewhere

The Alabama result stands apart from the night's broader trend. In Michigan, Democrat Jocelyn Benson defeated Republican Rep. John James, extending Democratic control of the governor's office 2. In Minnesota, Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar defeated Republican state House Speaker Lisa Demuth, becoming the first woman to serve as governor 3. In Texas, Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, ending more than three decades of Republican control of the governor's office 4.

That matters because the governorships Democrats won will shape state policy on schools, health care and elections, while Alabama keeps a Trump ally in charge of a deep-red state 1234. The pattern is a split verdict: Democrats gained ground in several states, but not in Alabama 1.

The Record

  1. Tuberville won the Republican primary with more than 85 percent of the vote; Jones won the Democratic primary with nearly 79 percent 1.
  2. Campaign finance reports through this date showed Tuberville raised about $17.7 million and Jones about $6.8 million 1.
  3. Decision Desk HQ projected Tuberville defeated Jones in Alabama's governor's race 1.
