Democrat Gina Hinojosa won election Tuesday as governor of Texas, defeating Republican incumbent Greg Abbott, according to a race call by The Associated Press 13. The AP declared Hinojosa the winner at 11:17 p.m. EST 1.

Hinojosa, a five-term state representative from Austin, will be Texas' first Latina governor and the first Democrat to win a governor's race in the state since 1990 12. She is 52 and will take office in January 2027 3.

Abbott, 68, was seeking an unprecedented fourth term after first winning election in 2014 13. He conceded Tuesday night. "There are still votes to be counted, but mathematically, we're not going to be able to win this election," Abbott told supporters 4. "I let Gina know that I would assist her and her team in a period of transition" 4.

The outcome reversed expectations. Major forecasters had seen Hinojosa as having a tougher fight against Abbott, who had outspent her, and a polling average had her slightly behind heading into Election Day 4. The Guardian reported that at the outset her candidacy was viewed as the longest-of-long shots 2.

Hinojosa built her campaign around public education, household costs and criticism of the state's Republican leadership 3. She opposed the private-school voucher program championed by Abbott that began in 2026 with $1 billion in tax money for students attending private schools, and she pledged to replace Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath with an educator 3.

Abbott sought to portray Hinojosa as too "woke" for Texas, attacking her in Trumpian terms as "gender-bender Hinojosa" 2. Hinojosa countered with an ad in which she described herself as a mom, a Texan and soon-to-be governor 2.

David Crockett, a political science professor at Trinity University in San Antonio, said before the election that a win by Hinojosa "would be perceived as an earthquake" after decades of Republican statewide victories 3. But she'll likely face a Republican-led legislature. "Getting any meaningful legislation through is going to require them to find something they can agree on and that's not going to be easy," Crockett said 3.

Nancy Sims, a political science lecturer at the University of Houston, said before Election Day that a Democratic breakthrough would reflect frustration with Washington. "If Democrats win in Texas in 2026, it will be because of anger at the federal government and at Donald Trump," she said 3.

The Texas result came as Democrat James Talarico was projected to win the Texas Senate race against state Attorney General Ken Paxton, and as Democrats won control of both the Senate and the House, The Hill reported 4. That matters because a governor elected on a promise to replace the education commissioner and revisit the voucher program will still need lawmakers to pass any changes 3.
