Georgia election board invites Trump probe as his fraud push stalls elsewhere
Trump's election-fraud investigations hit setbacks in court and in several states. Georgia's own election board has invited his administration in, and its chair says the board's letters went too far.

On the eve of the midterm elections, President Trump's push to investigate alleged election fraud is running into trouble. Georgia is the exception, according to Axios. The state's own election board has invited his administration to look at its voting system 1.
That matters because Georgia was at the center of Trump's effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election, Axios noted 1.
Setbacks elsewhere
The Justice Department said in court on Friday that it has sent letters to officials in California, Washington, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Nevada. Some of the letters ask states to set aside mail-in ballots from suspected noncitizen voters 1.
The administration also lost in California on Friday. An appeals court rejected its demand to set aside mail-in ballots there 1.

What Georgia's board did
The Georgia State Election Board voted 3-2 on Sept. 28 to direct its executive director, James Mills, to seek federal help. That included urging the secretary of state to update the state's voting machines 2.
Mills then sent letters to the U.S. attorney general, the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security. They asked federal officials to prohibit noncompliant electronic tabulation. They also asked for a binding six-month deadline for Georgia to adopt a system that meets the Help America Vote Act, a 2002 federal election law, and that eliminates QR codes on ballots 2.
Board Chair John Fervier, who was appointed by Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, voted against the resolution. He said the board never reviewed or authorized the letters 2.
We don't even know who wrote them at this point. I don't believe the executive director wrote them
Fervier told Axios that a majority of the board now believes the letter "far exceeded what was in the resolution" 1. Some members want the letters rescinded. That would require a board meeting 2.
Vice Chair Janelle King disagreed. She said Mills followed the resolution, and she took the lack of response from other board members after Mills shared the letters as acceptance 2.
The letters were being sent based on the instructions in the resolution. He was doing his job
A system under strain
Georgia has spent years debating how to fix weaknesses in its voting system 1. A Georgia election official told Axios the state has gotten by "with duct tape and bubble gum" for one more round, and called that "not a way of running elections" 1.
The official also said no side has clean hands. The secretary of state could have pushed harder for funding, the official said, and the legislature could have paid for it when asked 1.
What happens next
Axios's bottom line is that the fight over federal involvement in state elections is far from over 1. Georgia's early voting began Oct. 13, so the dispute is playing out while ballots are being cast 2.
The pattern is worth watching. A request that comes from a state's own board gives the federal government a way into a state's election system that it lacks in states that are resisting. Here, though, the board's chair says the letters were never approved.
