Trump's push to redraw House maps backfired in most states, results show
Republicans redrew congressional maps in the middle of the decade to protect their House majority. A state-by-state count shows Democrats won many of the seats the new maps were drawn to take from them, and voters turned down redraw plans on the ballot.

In August 2025, President Donald Trump said Republicans were entitled to five more U.S. House seats in Texas 8. His party then started an unusual push to redraw congressional maps in the middle of the decade, instead of waiting for the census that comes every 10 years 27. Most midterm results are now in, and in most states the gamble did not pay off 17.
Texas Republicans had hoped to split the state's House seats 30 to 8. Instead they will hold 24 seats to Democrats' 14 2. They lost four of the five Democratic districts their new map went after, and they also lost two seats they already held 2.
I got the highest vote in the history of Texas. And we are entitled to five more seats.
In a state-by-state review updated Thursday, CBS News said Republicans were on track to lose every district they had tried to redraw 1. A gerrymander is a map drawn to help one party. When it ends up helping the other party, political scientists call it a dummymander. CBS put that label on Texas, Ohio, North Carolina and Alabama 1.
What happened, state by state
Ohio: Before the election, Republicans held 10 of the state's House seats and Democrats held 5. Republicans drew a new map meant to win them two more. Instead, Democrats were ahead 8 seats to 7 in CBS's tally 1. The effort to take the seats of Democratic Reps. Greg Landsman and Marcy Kaptur failed 3.

North Carolina: The new map went after Democratic Rep. Don Davis. Davis won, and as of CBS's Thursday update, Democrats had won nine seats, up from four before the election. CBS rated five more Republican-held seats as toss-ups 1.
Florida: Republicans redrew four Democratic-held seats in their favor and were on track to lose all four 34. CBS still listed four Florida races as toss-ups 1.
Alabama and Louisiana: Alabama's map went after both of the state's majority-Black districts held by Democrats, and both Democrats won 1. Louisiana's map was drawn to wipe out one majority-Black Democratic district. Its 5th District is going to a runoff, and the 6th is a toss-up 1. Tennessee was the clearest exception. Republicans won the redrawn 9th District, which is based in Memphis 1.
Politico's count, quoted by election law scholar Rick Hasen, said that in a normal year the redraws could have given Republicans up to a dozen extra seats. In a year when Democrats were on pace to win the national vote by about 13 points, Republicans came out just two seats ahead 7. Speaking anonymously to Fox News Digital, one House Republican called the redraws a mistake and said the party had overreached 3.
Voters also said no at the ballot box
In Missouri, voters rejected Proposition A, the referendum on the 2025 map, by about 62% to 38%, according to the Associated Press 9. That map split Kansas City into three districts to unseat Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver 9. Courts had already required the state to use its 2022 map this fall, and Cleaver won reelection under those lines 91. Democrats also won Missouri's 2nd District, which Republican Rep. Ann Wagner had held 4.
Missourians do not want our elections rigged by insiders in D.C.
In Colorado, Amendment 86, which Republicans put forward, would have made it harder to redraw the map before 2031. It won 53.11% of the vote, short of the 55% needed to change the state constitution 10. In Maryland, voters approved Question 3 by 20 points. It removes the state's rules that districts be compact and connected, and Democrats are likely to redraw the map to go after the state's only Republican House member 1.
The issue also mattered to voters. In a national YouGov survey by political scientist Dana R. Fisher's team, taken in the two weeks before Election Day, 42% of respondents said gerrymandering concerned them a good deal or a fair amount 5. Among Democrats, only immigration enforcement ranked higher 5.
What comes next
The fight is not over. Missouri Republicans could try another redraw in 2027 or 2028. But Amendment 6, which also passed, bars the legislature from overriding a referendum result 9.
California voters had approved Proposition 50, Democrats' answer to the Texas map. Five of the state's nine Republican House members lost 6. Rep. Zoe Lofgren, who leads the California Democratic delegation, said the measure gave discouraged voters a way to fight back 6.
It gave Democrats and voters an opportunity to do something and to realize that they, in fact, did have power to act
Lofgren has introduced bills several times to ban mid-decade redistricting and set up independent redistricting commissions in every state. She said she hopes a Democratic-controlled Congress will be open to the idea 6. She is less sure Republicans will join in.
The idea that this will be bipartisan, I'm skeptical because of their prior actions. But we'll see.
That matters because the maps were sold as protection for the House majority, and the majority is gone anyway. The pattern is that a map can tilt the field, but it could not hold back this many voters turning out against the party in power. For voters, the lesson is that district lines in several states could change again before 2028, and each change can be fought in court and at the ballot box.
