Midterms 2026 · Report · File No. 261102-679
Vance's final midterm push doubles as a 2028 test, with no decision until after Tuesday
The vice president is campaigning hard for Republicans while saying he hasn't decided on a 2028 run. His tone and targets show what a Vance campaign might sound like.

Vice President JD Vance is spending the last days before Tuesday's midterm election on the road for Republican candidates. Many in the party see the trip as a preview of a 2028 run for president. Vance has not announced one 34.
He has said the election comes first. In an Oct. 19 interview aboard Air Force Two, he said: "I'm focused on the midterm elections, and I want to get as many good Republicans elected in early November as possible." 1
What Vance has said about 2028
Vance told interviewer Mark Halperin he thinks President Trump would back him if he runs. He also said he has never discussed it with Trump 1. He added that there is a chance he won't run at all, and noted that he and his wife, Usha, have four small children 1.
I think if I run, the president will endorse me, sure.
Trump has encouraged competition between Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for the 2028 Republican nomination 1. CNN reported in September that Rubio has said he would support Vance if Vance runs. Some conservatives still see Rubio as a strong alternative 2.

An Emerson College/The Hill poll reported in August found Rubio did better than Vance against leading Democrats in four of five matchups 4.
The campaign trail
At a Texas rally, according to a Nov. 1 summary of a report by The Hill, Vance went after Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico. The summary also says Vance called himself "a product of the American dream." 3
Republican donor Dan Eberhart told The Hill that Vance "can't draw Trump's crowds" but is energetic against Democrats. He also said Vance is "building his IOU pile in preparation for a run." 3
At an Oct. 29 stop in Weatherford, Texas, Vance targeted Talarico 6. The Dallas Express report quotes no Democratic response.
Talarico has long defended transgender young people. In 2021, in opposing a Texas bill on school sports, he said: "Trans children are God's children, made in God's own image." 5
What happens next
Vance has said he will decide on 2028 after the midterms 2. Tyler Bowyer of Turning Point Action told CNN the result matters a great deal to that decision 2. A Vance ally, Curt Mills, said Trump and Vance cannot move before the midterms 2.
That matters because Vance is tied to a president whose standing is weak. A Reuters/Ipsos poll in August put Trump's approval at 33%, the lowest of his current term 4. If Republicans lose ground Tuesday, Vance will have to explain that record while running for the top job.
The pattern so far is a vice president who blends a more centrist tone with sharp attacks on opponents. AFP reported his August speech in Ohio sounded more centrist than Trump's, though he was harsh on immigration and what he called "woke" politics 4. CNN said he steered clear of topics Trump embraced, including $5,000 checks, the Iran war and tariffs 2.
